All Players should bring the necessary equipment to the tournament. This equipment includes a chess set (board, pieces and clock if available). The board for standard sets should have squares approximately 2 to 2 1/2 inches. An acceptable square size maybe up to 1/8 inches larger, but not smaller. Colors should offer a high contracst between the light and dark sections yet remain pleasing to the eye. A staunton set is recommended. Pieces should be made of plastic or wood. Glass pieces are not acceptable. The king should be 3 3/8" to 4 1/2" in height. The Staunton pattern is the standard. Pieces should be the colors of the naturally light and dark wood or approximations of these color. A clock is recommended in most tournaments. However, clocks can be somewhat expensive, ranging from $20 on up. A clock is not a necessity. If a clock is not used, claims based upon time can not be made. |

Here is a link to the Chess Tournament Guide for Parents. It does a nice job of describing how a tournament is run. It describes in detail about swiss style tournaments, how tie breaks work, as well as parent behavior. There is a lot of information available and it will help you better understand how chess tournaments work. http://www.chessctr.org/primer.php
